The Boy Scouts in the picture symbolizes the boy, who early in life is shaped in roles that are difficult to break out of, for example, gender roles and career choices. In the artist Ann Eringstam’s series ”Escape to Reality”, the scouts try to move from an artificial world into an alternate reality.
In Eringstam’s series Escape to Reality (2010) she focuses on the roles we play as a result of our culture, our bringing up and the influence of media on our lives. The works depict an artificial reality filled with symbolism and stereotypical images illustrating how, with the help of persistent intent, we can break ingrained routines and patterns.
Escape to Reality is Eringstam’s (born 1977) first solo exhibition in Finland. She lives and works in Gothenburg. Her art contrasts the idealized but unrealistic pictures of fictional reality with our own ideas of reality, norms and identities. Eringstam works as a lecturer at the School of Photography at the University of Gothenburg.
