Family Portrait deals with finding a partner and starting a family, by focusing on the physical side of things, as well as the emotions and hidden connotations involved. Approaching it on a personal level, the series comes face to face with the forbidden emotions of being a mother and the "disappearance" of the self in the first years of being a parent.
"I never connected the world of menstrual periods, breasts and erections with having actual children, until the time was right for me to have one. I thought that uncontrolled discharges and urinary incontinence were things related to old age that had nothing whatsoever to do with my reality. The physicality of having a baby took me completely by surprise, as did everything falling on the mother, that is, me. The portraits of couples were created by photographing each person separately, to emphasise the individuality of each subject. This makes the poses the subjects' own, as they are not leaning on their partners."
