In the installation A Game of Cards a character is playing cards with his tormentor. A sense of horror and strangeness is part of the world of Juhana Moisander's work.
" In my works, I am building a dark space where history, memory and fantasy meet. According to the traditional definition, horror emerges from a breakdown of cultural categories or a failure to define them. In addition to these elements, my works incorporate the present and the past, and the still and the moving.
My aim is to identify with a specific memory, a narrative motif or a circumstance, and to condense it into a gesture or movement that is as simple as possible. I fit my works into the space I am given.
In the installation A Game of Cards, which combines video projections and physical objects, a character is playing cards with his tormentor. A deck of cards, the Devil's picture book, asks you what your bet is and what your call will be."
