Hertta Kiiski: Violet sea, 2019.

Hertta Kiiski
Violet sea

This is Violet Sea. Here, works by artist Hertta Kiiski (b. 1973) from the last ten years are brought together with new works and a new exhibition space. Their energies are ready to meet your energy. Girls, animals of other species, rocks and time take the center stage.

Hertta Kiiski photographs childhood, girlhood and the domestic sphere. She does not, however, document everyday life. She photographs presence and the passage of time. According to her, remembering the limitedness of life strengthens the intensity of being. The photographs and the videos show her own daughters and her niece. As photographic subjects, they are always aware of the examining gaze of the camera. Their active role as authors and performers has strengthened throughout the years towards equal collaboration.

At Violet Sea you will also encounter work that discusses the non-human animal rights as well as climate anxiety. Kiiski approaches these subjects through emotions. The angle is not always that of hopelessness; empathy appears alongside dark visions of the future. According to Kiiski, empathy could blur the artificial divide between mankind and other nature and put a stop to the culture of oppression and instrumentalisation. It could act as a bridge to more empathic and fair coexistence. You are very welcome here.
