Open Call of Portfolio Review and Seminar Invitation
Open Call of Portfolio Review on 16th of February 2024
The Finnish Museum of Photography invites artists to apply for the portfolio review event, which will be held at the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki on February 16, 2024. This open call is for artists who work with lens-based and expanded photography practices.
The portfolio review event aims to provide a platform for artists to connect with curators and fellow artists, fostering dialogues and potential collaborations. We hope this portfolio review will serve as a common ground where we can listen, share, comment, and support each other across schools, artist studios, and art institutions.
The portfolio review day will host a total of 25 artists and 10 curators. We will invite curators from Finland and abroad and will publish their names at the end of December. There will be two sessions of portfolio reviews, each lasting two hours; artists will join both sessions. During each session, artists will present their works to two curators and four fellow artists. The presentation will be in English. During the day, the artists will show their works to four curators and 8 fellow artists. The day will conclude with artists collectively showcasing their portfolios to all participants.
The selection of artists for this event will be made by The Finnish Museum of Photography through the open call. In the section process, we will do our best to match the interests of invited curators and selected artists. Participation in the portfolio review is free for artists, and we will provide evening refreshments for both artists and curators.
The deadline for the applications is Thursday, November 30, 2023 (11:59 pm, GMT+3).
To apply, please send a PDF of your portfolio to Yujie Zhou at yujie.zhou@fmp.fi. Portfolio can be in an online format. Please write 1-2 sentences in the email about your current interests or focus points in your practice. Please name the subject of the email as "Portfolio Review 2024". You will receive a confirmation email when your application has been received by us.
Welcome to a seminar about the relationship of artists and curators on 15th of February 2024
The Finnish Museum of Photography will be organizing a seminar in February 2024. This seminar, as part of the EU-project Out of the Metropolis, will focus on the relationships between artists and curators. From viewing these relationships through the perspective of power dynamics, care, and sharing, the discussions during the seminar will raise questions about how artists and curators, as cultural agents, shape, manage, and nurture these collaborative relationships. The broader themes of Out of the Metropolis project will also enrich these dialogues, linking artist-curator relations with topics like social and environmental sustainability, as well as the unique aspects of photography curating.
The Helsinki seminar program will feature lectures by guest speakers, a panel discussion, and a day of portfolio reviews with artists and curators. Artists invited to the portfolio review day will be selected through an open call. The program is open to all and free of charge. Details about the speakers and the program will be published at the end of December 2023. The seminar program will be conducted in English and will take place at the Finnish Museum of Photography on February 15-16, 2024.
Out of the Metropolis - Art exchange across borders is a collaborative project initiated by The Finnish Museum of Photography (Finland), NOUA (Norway), and Doubledummy (France). This three-year project (2023-2025) aims to explore and support insights and innovations in the field of co-creation and the circulation of visual art, especially contemporary photographic practices, across borders. The project includes seminar programs at NOUA in Bodø, Norway in September 2023, at The Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki, Finland in February 2024, and at Doubledummy in Arles, France in July 2024.
